Woodlawn Lake/San Antonio
2018
Woodlawn Lake Recreational Center is a new building project that will replace the existing Berta Almaguer Dance Studio Building. The project will be named after Berta Almaguer, a dance instructor who taught for many years at the existing site. The new building will be 10,000 sf and will double the size of the replaced structure.
There will be one large and two small dance studios with sprung floors, offices, and storage for the dance program. The building will also house a divisible classroom space and a large lobby for the community during the day and the dancers when dance classes are in session. The design takes its cues from the modernist style of the existing building, but with higher, pitched metal roof with interlocking shed roofs and deep overhangs, clean, modern wall panels, and translucent Kalwall panels at the entry and clerestory.
The site design will improve existing parking and will add a new Yoga / Pilates patio that will overlook an adjacent casting pond, which will be for public and dance use.
